Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) for Trauma, Anxiety, and Feeling Stuck

What is Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART)?

Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) is a powerful form of trauma therapy designed to help you process and release distressing memories, sensations, and emotions, often in just a few sessions.

The goal is to allow the brain and nervous system to re-store or reconsolidate the memory of a distressing event so that it no longer triggers intense emotional or physical responses.

ART draws on methods from exposure therapy, imagery rescripting, and bilateral stimulation (similar to EMDR), its mechanism is aligned with emerging neuroscience around memory reconsolidation.

ART uses eye movements (or other forms of bilateral stimulation) and visualization techniques to help your brain reprocess traumatic memories or distressing problems so that they no longer trigger anxiety, fear, or physical discomfort.

How Does ART Work?

ART is grounded in neuroscience and the body’s natural ability to heal from distress. Bilateral stimulation mirrors the brain’s activity during REM sleep. This allows the brain’s emotional and sensory systems to “update” old memories and physiological reactions (e.g., tense muscles, racing heart, knots in your stomach).

You will work with your counsellor to:

Clients will notice rapid changes in how the memory or problem feels in the body, like less tension, and significant differences in the emotions attached to them.

Because ART works directly with the nervous system, results are often noticeable within one to five sessions.

The Benefits of Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART)

Based on the peer-reviewed research, ART has been found to provide

Symptom Relief

Significantly reduce symptoms of PTSD (e.g., intrusion, avoidance, arousal)

Emotional Wellbeing

Demonstrate reductions in co-occurring depression and anxiety symptoms

Pain Reduction

Show reduction in pain intensity and chronic pain-related limitations in those who have also experienced trauma

Faster Results

Be delivered in fewer sessions (often 1–5) compared with many traditional trauma therapies, which may require many more sessions.

Note: While ART shows promising evidence, the research base is still emerging, and more large‐scale, long-term studies are recommended.

Why ART After an Accident?

Although ART can help with a wide range of mental health concerns, the mechanisms that lead to healing can be particularly powerful for accident-related trauma, driving anxiety, and the stress of rehabilitation after a significant or life-altering injury.

ART allows your brain and body to finally relax so that you can start moving with more confidence and comfort.
